Every summer, on time, the catchphrase about how to best choose / use the air conditioner reoccurs . But the technologies to cool one’s home are different. Which ones to choose?
With the warning that haste is often a bad adviser, because it leads to preferring a solution as immediate as possible, with little or no “invasive” interventions (masonry, holes, modifications of the systems). We then propose a mini-guidance guide .
Fixed air conditioners
We skip the cheaper devices, the old-on-off ones, to focus on multi-split air-to-air heat pump air conditioners with inverter technology. They are the most efficient, silent and versatile.
First, we need to calculate the power needed to adequately cool the apartment, expressed in BTU ( British Thermal Unit ). The starting point then is 340 BTU / hx sqm. For example, for a 20 square meter room, you will need a device with a power of at least 6,800 BTU / h.
However, it is always good to rely on an experienced installer. A more precise calculation, in fact, should include other factors, such as the degree of thermal insulation of the room, the number of windows , the characteristics of the frames.
One mistake to avoid is oversizing the individual indoor units, thinking of cooling several rooms to get the maximum benefit without raising the bills. On the correct use of the air conditioner, we report the practical advice published by ENEA , in addition to our guide on the incentives available .
It is always advisable to buy models in class A + or higher . When examining the energy label, one must pay close attention to the seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER).
A high value indicates maximum efficiency: it means that the cooling capacity expressed by the machine requires less electricity absorption, compared to a machine with a lower SEER value. Two other important “items” are seasonal energy consumption, expressed in kWh / year and sound power levels in decibels of indoor and outdoor units.
Portable air conditioners
On average, more noisy and less efficient than fixed relatives, portable air conditioners are certainly practical, cheaper , easy to install without any masonry / plant work, unlike the fixed ones that require the installation of one or more external motors.
There is a note on the real transportability of these appliances: but it is also true that they carry their flexible hose with a diameter of a dozen centimeters, essential to eliminate the outgoing hot air.
The tube, therefore, must be inserted in some way in a window , with a hole in the glass or simply by placing it on the window sill and keeping the window ajar (in this case, however, warmer air enters the room). On the market there are also gaskets to be fitted between the frame and the frame, in which to insert the hose, but they are not very beautiful to see. It must be said, in short, that some advantages of laptops, including compactness and functionality, are somewhat diminished by the unattractive presence of the tube.
